WHAT IS THE GOSPEL?

I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. ~Jesus, Luke 5:32

The Gospel is the Greatest Story Ever Told

The gospel is the good news that the only true God, the just and gracious Creator of the universe, has looked upon hopelessly sinful men and women and has sent His Son, God in the flesh, to bear His wrath against sin through His substitutionary death on the cross and to show His power over sin and death in the resurrection from the grave, so that everyone who turns from their sin and themselves and trusts in Jesus alone as Savior and Lord will be reconciled to God forever. ~David Platt

The Gospel

What if I told you this world is broken? That all the hurt, pain, sickness, betrayal, and wrong wasn’t always there?

In the beginning, the world was perfect. God made it so that we could have a right relationship with Him. We obviously don’t live in that kind of a world. What happened?

What Happened To The World?

What happened is sin entered the world. People rebelled against God. God has rules, and we break those rules. But that isn’t without consequences. After that, all things became distorted. Things that were made to be good became tainted with evil. New desires resulted in betrayal, lying, and death. Every one of us feels the weight of the brokenness caused by our sin, as we hurt ourselves and others, rebelling against God.

We Feel The Weight Of Our Sin

Because we don’t like this brokenness, we find ways to dull the pain. Some of us turn to alcohol or drugs so we can be high for a time. Some will try to get the best job, the hottest husband or wife, and the biggest house, and live the good life. Others turn to religion, trying to win God’s favor by doing good, and not doing bad. But all these things act as bungee cords: they let us feel like we are escaping for a while, before snapping us back and causing us to feel the brokenness caused by our sin even more.

The result: we are left broken by sin, hopeless, and destined to be punished for our sin forever.

So What Did God Do About It?

But, God loves us. He loves us so much that He made a way for us to be free from sin. He sent His son Jesus, God in the flesh, to earth. Jesus lived a perfect life, He had no sin. He went around doing good, healing the sick, forgiving people of sin, and delivering them from demonic oppression. And according to God’s plan, wicked men put Him to death on a cross. Jesus had no sin, and when He went to the cross, He took our sin, that we deserved to pay for, and paid the punishment Himself. And so Jesus died, and we are forgiven.

That's Not The Whole Story

That’s not where the story ends though. To prove that Jesus was in fact God’s Son, and that His sacrifice was accepted, God raised Him from the dead three days after He died. After that point, Jesus spent time with the people closest to Him, teaching them, and then He ascended to Heaven to be with God the Father. His death paid for our sin, but His ascension to Heaven gives us hope that we have an advocate: When we sin, He says “I paid for that sin, it is forgiven.” Not only that, He gives us hope by saying we too will be with Him someday.

How Do You Get In On It?

How do you get in on this? It’s simple:

Turn from the sins that left you broken, trust in Jesus that when He died, He died for your sin, and make Him the king of your life, following Him.

If we believe this, turning from our sins, and trusting Jesus as our Saviour and King, then God makes us a new person. Someone who has changed desires that honor God, someone who again has a right relationship with God. Someone who has been forgiven, and someone who no longer feels the full weight of the broken world because we have hope.

Trust Jesus, and Make Him Known

There are only 2 types of people: Those who know Jesus, and have forgiveness, hope, and a new life. And there are those who are left in their sin, hopeless, and destined to be separated from God. Which one are you? Please consider what Jesus has done for you and turn from your sins, and if you are already His follower, share this good news with others.
